Test train 995 approaches Starkey Hill where the pair of C39-8's (8567, 8566) will be put to the test, monitored by research car NS 32. Note the hose draped over the pilot, for "wet rail testing". During June 2003 NS ran several test trains including this pair of C39-8's, a pair of SD50's, and a trio of former N&W 1600 series SD40-2's. I'm not sure what they were trying to establish so late in the game for these models, unless they wanted to see how they measured up against each other...
