An eastbound Southern Pacific freight passes a coal train laid up with locomotive issues on top of Soldier Summit, Utah, on September 7, 1995. Note the white sand on top of the rails in front of SP GE AC4400CW No. 317 left there when the train backed into the clear. SP’s AC4400CWs were brand new at the time and had a few minor teething problems, mostly with software issues from what I remember.
