Two former N&W low-hood SD40-2’s, interleaved with two high-hood SD40-2’s, one each of N&W and Southern Railway heritage, wait in Conrail’s Allentown, Pennsylvania yard to get a train to head back to home rails. The quartet most likely arrived on train SRAL, and would return on ALSR, the newly-instituted run through trains between Allentown and Linwood, NC.
Almost three decades later, I find it fascinating how nostalgic contemporary railfans are about NS SD40-2’s. At the time, I probably debated over spending fifty cents on a slide depicting four drably-painted examples of the some of the most common power in US railroading. Someday perhaps someone will find GEVO’s to be interesting.
