Remarks & Notes
Three Rio Grande EMD SD40T-2 Tunnel Motors head eastbound through Castilla with a short “dirt train” picked up at Sutro on the west side of the Soldier Summit grade. With only five unpatched/unrenumbered Rio Grande SD40T-2s left on the Union Pacific system on this particular date, the majority (Nos. 5390, 5371 and 5349) are making this unusual detour over the hill. The date of May 5, 2004, ended up being the very last time that three Rio Grande locomotives crossed Soldier Summit together.
