Remarks & Notes
Reflected in the relatively still waters of the Lehigh River, Conrail train OICG (Oak Island – Corning) rolls through the Lehigh Gap, which once hosted three mainline railroads. The train is on the one-time mainline of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, the sole survivor of the three. The photo is taken from the western approach to the Lehigh and New England’s landmark bridge across the Gap, with a bridge pier visible in the foreground. The L&NE shut down in 1961, and the bridge was demolished six years later. Out of sight below the vantage point was the Lehigh Valley main line, which was torn up in the 1980’s.
