Remarks & Notes |
Pilings of the Original Matawan Creek Trestle - A 1965 built locomotive shoves across the 1953 completed embankment and past the pilings of the original 1870s NY&LB trestle. The original two-track trestle burnt down in 1946. A single track trestle was built in just 10 days and remained in service until the embankment opened in 1953. The temporary single-track trestle must have been built on top the pilings that are cut even. Looking at the pilings closely you'll see the tops bare a darker, burnt color. The pilings had been cut down to where the wood was not consumed by the fire and that the temporary single-track trestle must have been built directly on top of them.
More recently erosion had occurred underneath the concrete culvert. To facilitate the maintenance work trees and vegetation were removed from the embankment opening up this temporary vantage.
What also adds to the intrique of this location is that rumor has it that an old locomtive derailed off the trestle and may be burried here under the marsh muck.
