NS U57 shoves empties by the former L&N freight station in Appalachia. Prior to highway relocation in the late 1980s, Business 23, the main highway between Appalachia and Norton, ran beside the depot, as evidenced by the faint double lines in the pavement to the left of the depot. The empties are being shoved to the loadout at Paragon, located a couple miles east of Appalachia on the former L&N CV Appalachia-Norton main line.
