Empire of the North final Stand
On a cold gloomy evening at the Chattanooga Diesel Shop we get a glimpse of eight out of a large quantity of SD40-2 that was acquired by Norfolk Southern Corp from leasing companies such as CEFX, CITX, FURX, HLCX, and NERX. The new-used motors have already got their new class 3400 series on them, but the sad part is the fact that the original paint says it all. Pretty much all eight of these SD40-2s have had their humble beginnings with the historic Burlington Northern Railroad, and after almost 30+ years of sporting the famous Cascade Green this paint scheme is on borrowed time. Their are currently 100+ SD40-2 that are none NW, SOU, or CR which shows you that the SD40-2 still have a predominate presence on Norfolk Southern's system.
The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves reliable by clocking in several million miles of freight service over several decades.
