A Rare Bird Around These Parts
The haulage right CSX Z345-07 (NS 117) is about .7 miles at the crest of Raccoon Mountain grade just north of the TN/GA Stateline in Whiteside, TN (MP J-139.8 Whiteside) on the CSX Chattanooga Sub. Once the long manifest conquer the grade the two generation of GE locomotives will go into dynamic braking to keep the train at a safe speed while holding the tonnage back. Once the manifest get to the bottom of the mountain, it will continue north on the Subdivision where the designated train will get back on NS Trackage in Stevenson, then it's off to Sheffield Classification Yard in Sheffield, AL.
Freight Cowls are standard locomotives that have a hood that extends the full width of the locomotive. Sadly, most Freight Cowls have been retired, but a few still run on short lines.
