The “launch pad” located behind Erie Lackawanna’s Diesel Shop in Marion, Ohio served as an interesting backdrop for roster-type shots, and permission to photograph was easy to obtain. EL C424, which is seen here, was the last unit in the railroad’s order for 15 new C424s ; the Alco builder plate read June 1963. The four-axle centuries were the first new power ordered by the railroad since the October 1960 merger; they were delivered in black with gold trim, reminiscent of the old Erie.
