Remarks & Notes |
A few miles west of downtown Salt Lake City is the suburb of Magna. Magna is home to Kennecott Copper Company's. huge complex of smelter, copper refinery and acid works. All of the ore concentrates from the Bingham Canyon Mine are transported here via a 17 mile pipeline and are then smelted into matte copper of 70% copper content The visual center point of the complex is the 1200 foot tall smelter stack. The Union Pacific Lyndyll Sub. passes directly in front of the smelter and at the aptly named control point Smelter splits into two branches; Westbound, the Lyndyll Sub hangs a left towards California, and the Shafter Sub continues west into Nevada. A bridge over the tracks at Garfield allows for this view. Here the MRVHK1-17 swings around the smelter complex and heads for Salt Lake City. |
