Less than a month before the Union Pacific takeover, a westbound drag on the Modoc Line climbs the 2.2% grade of Howard's Gulch. It looks like the job has a sufficient number of "cinder blocks" to pull the hill. This six mile grade between Canby and Ambrose was the biggest obstacle for Oregon-bound trains on the Modoc. Fortunately for SP, most trains in this direction were lumber empties. This was my last photo of an SP train on the Modoc Line. |
