Remarks & Notes
I was told by an old-timer Santa Fe Engineer once that you could tell on the Marceline Sub when you were going up or down on the hills. The top of most grades were at an overpass, and the bottoms were at bridges over water. I have been to this highway 218 bridge many times but never knew that it was the top of a good grade. Thanks to some friend's hard work I grab a shot off my "to do list" today. Here a loaded sand train fights the .75-.80% grade into New Boston as they pass the approach signal for the Argyle crossovers in southern Iowa. Hard to believe that in late 2018 an old style Santa Fe signal bridge can still be found. This one and handful of others still march traffic on this busy Transcon Mainline.
