It’s hard to believe that it has been 3 years since my father, Richard Steinbrenner, passed, and I hope everyone doesn’t mind indulging my sharing a memory. In the 1980s, we often went on trips to New England and Canada during my March breaks from secondary school to photograph Alcos/MLWs in the snow. On March 16, 1982, we drove to Coteau, PQ and, as darkness fell, encountered snow squalls with large snowflakes, bringing visibility down to near zero. At this point we were in sparsely populated northern New York State, and had no choice but to press on slowly, questioning our sanity for making this trip. As he would say whenever we overcommitted in our railfanning activities, we needed to have our heads examined.
We arrived at our hotel really late that night, but were rewarded with many FPA-4 led passenger trains the next day at Coteau Junction (although CN freight activity was slow). Here a snow-encrusted FPA-4 makes a station stop with an eastbound at Coteau station. R.T. Steinbrenner photo
