Nearly six years have passed since I pursued this BKNM advancing through Bucksport, Maine with cars for Bangor and points beyond. An impressive snow storm the day before had proven to be a chore, with three units leading two days worth of cars. The distant crossing signal was for Route 15/River Road and the closer was for Kenney Drive. The crew was more concerned about sliding cars on River Road than me being down alongside the ROW up past my knees in snow. The headlight had been giving them problems back when the job left Verso, but D1 gave them permission to head out with ditch lights only under certain rules. Flash ahead to December of 2014, and the branch would see its last true revenue freights once the mill closed after 90 years of paper making. The end of 2019 will mark five years since that ominous Christmas package to 500+ workers who lost their jobs. As of this date, the mill complex has been repurposed, but the branch remains unused and forlorn while awaiting its fate.
