On a pleasant September 27, 2018, all four locomotives at the Sanitary District of Chicago facility in Stickney, Illinois, were soaking up the early autumn sun. In this view, two-thirds of the operation's venerable SW1 switchers can be seen: CSDX 3 (built in December 1952) and CSDX 1 (built in July 1952). The three SW1s, along with an MP15DC, are all still working for their original owner and are in very nice condition. This operation moves waste (technically known as biosolids) to drying ponds in side-dump cars. In fact, this railroad, reportedly the only railroad in the US that hauls human waste, does not interchange with any other railroads except on the rare occasion in which equipment is delivered or sent out for repairs that cannot be completed in the shop building in the background. Note the Jordan Spreader in the distance, used to keep the line operating in the winter. After all, the waste knows no season!
