They say if you hang out around the railroad long enough, you will see just about anything. Here, we have the Coast Starlights meeting in Klamath Falls on 2004's first Saturday morning. Needless to say, this is a very rare sight.
Northbound train 14 (at left) had a nearly on-time arrival. It then had to wait over two and a half hours for a relief crew to reach Klamath Falls on a commercial airline flight from Portland. Southbound train 11 has just rolled to a stop, thirteen hours late due to a blizzard in the Cascades.
Normally, train 11's inbound Portland-based crew would have a late evening arrival at Klamath Falls, and return home the following morning on train 14. Since southbound train 11 was monumentally late, there was no Amtrak crew in Klamath Falls to take train 14 home - hence the need to fly in a relief crew.
