Metro North GP40PH-2 4906 leads #1223 westbound through the Kingsland meadows on the Main Line to Waldwick. In the 1990s Juniata Locomotive Works was hard at work overhauling 13 ex-CNJ GP40Ps for NJ Transit by upgrading the units to "Dash 2" specs as well as adding a diesel HEP to the units. After the upgrades were deemed a success by NJ Transit, Juniata began experimenting with converting a Conrail GP40 into a passenger unit with their own specifications. The biggest change included extending the frame by four feet to add the HEP, as well as not having flared radiators like the NJT units. Before the unit was completed for showcasing on the market NJ Transit came knocking once again for Juniata to rebuild 19 ex Conrail GP40s for conversion into passenger units. Juniata showed NJT their specs, but they wound up wanting replicas of the 13 CNJ units recently rebuilt. As a result Juniata's experimental GP40 was sidelined for the time being until all 19 units were completed. Eventually the unit was put up for auction upon completion and was purchased by Metro-North Railroad. The 4906 continues to haul commuters across the NJ Transit system, primarily between Hoboken and Port Jervis.
