Detour Days in the Green Mountain State!
Three B40-8s and a GP40 are in charge of an 85 car detouring train 16R northbound on Vermont Railway's B&R Sub through the bucolic Otter Creek Valley countryside. The train is about 3 miles from Rutland Yard where the power will be run around and a VTR GP38 will be added to the point for the run over the Green Mountains to Bellows falls.
This Binghamton to East Deerfield Manifest is about one third of the way into its giant detour around the collapsed Hoosac Tunnel. The train has had to travel north on Vermont Railway's B&R sub to Rutland seen here before turning back southeast via the Green Mountain Railroad to Bellows Falls where Pan Am's trackage rights on the NECR are regained for the run down the Conn River.
For comparison this is an approximately 152 mile trip from Hoosick Jct., NY where the detours leave the freight main to Greenfield, MA where it is regained vs. 60 miles on the direct route via the ex B&M mainline. |
