Like The Old Days: NS autorack train 28W-02 (with the Pan Am ED-9 crew) puts their outbound train from the P&W together in the Gardner, MA Yard. This is an as-needed autorack train, this time being used to cover the westbound empty autorack detour to bypass the partially-collapsed Hoosac Tunnel on Pan Am Southern. The train will travel to Millers Falls, MA where it would head on to the NECR. From there it would go from Millers Falls to Bellows Falls, VT on NECR, over the VTR from Bellows Falls to Whitehall, NY, over the CP D&H from Whitehall to Saratoga Springs, NY, before finally headed back on to the NS D&H westbound. With the VTR having heavy restrictions on 6-axle locomotives, this detour is powered by a matching quintet of veteran NS GP38-2s! How often can you see that on a class one road freight nowadays?
