Cars slowly roll by as a westbound BNSF freight grinds out of Austin, Montana, climbing the 2.2% grade of Mullan Pass on Montana Rail Link’s Third Subdivision. The two GE C44-9Ws up front can be seen climbing out of the big curve leaving Austin, and will now negotiate another horseshoe curve that passes through Iron Ridge cut, which can be seen above the fifth car in the train.
