Time is not on the side of the Escalante Western Railway, a subsidiary of the Western Fuels Association. The last day is set for Thursday, April 30th. Enroute from Western Fuels' Escalante Generating Station to the Peabody Coal Company's Lee Ranch Mine, engineer Micah has his trio of SD40-3's working hard, to pull 48 empties out of Prewitt on the beautiful morning of April 23rd. In 2019, we lost the Black Mesa & Lake Powell. Now in 2020, we're losing the Escalante Western. They'll be missed, but I feel fortunate to have been able to photograph both of them. Sadly, it's just another sign of the times when it comes to coal fired railroads.
