Remarks & Notes
MRL SD45 346 heads down grade with 44 cars and 3,850 tons of freshly loaded ballast from the loader at Pipestone. The ballast loader at Pipestorne is the now terminus of the famous former Northern Pacific route over Homestake Pass, which is now MRL's 5th Subdivision. MRL 346 was one of just two 20-cylinder SD45s left in service on the MRL at the time of the photo. 346 was build for the Norfolk and Western in Febuary of 1970 as N&W 1779. The trailing locomotive, MRL SD40-2R 251 was built for Union Pacific as SD40 3002 in March of 1966.
