On April 28, 2006, Union Pacific’s famous 4-8-4 No. 844 leads an eastbound passenger train out of Watkins, Colorado, twenty miles east of Denver. Built by American Locomotive Company (Alco) in 1944, UP No. 844 has the distinction of being the only steam locomotive never retired by a North American Class 1 railroad.
