As the remnants of a cold winter storm cluster around the San Gabriel Mountains in the late afternoon, the 20,000-foot high cumulonimbus clouds at the higher elevations were still bathed in late the vespertine rays of the setting sun as Amtrak Pacific Surfliner 785 heads north. The train, with CDTX SC-44 2113 shoving on the rear, has just knocked down the clear signal at CP Maple as the train approaches the junction of Metrolink’s Orange and Olive Subs as it travels to Goleta.
