Ye Olde South Amboy: A lot of elements featured in this photo are now gone. NJT 5009 (former MNCR 5179 with an oversized NJT logo to cover the MTA logo) leads a solid Comet III consist into South Amboy Train Station. Not long after this photo was taken, South Amboy Station went from having 3 tracks to 2, the eastbound and westbound low-level platforms were removed and the new station to come outfitted with a center high-level island platform, the station structure and overpass were removed, and the Comet IIIs were removed from service. As for the Comet IIIs, they mainly only operated in solid sets at the start of their career in the early 1990s and at the end of the career, as seen here. A poster of "Les Miserables" is visible in the photo, complementing the dilapidated state that the old South Amboy Station had fallen into here. This consist was diesel powered due to the reconfiguration of the catenary at Rare Interlocking, just to the west of here (and unusually has the locomotive on the east end). With the main tracks closed for the weekend, all trains needed diesel power to bypass the work zone utilizing the former Raritan River Railroad Interchange Track, which did not have overhead wires. NJT 4145 (GP40PH-2A) is on the rear.
