North County Transit District operates the Coaster commuter trains in San Diego County, and also operates the 21.2 mile Escondido Sub, connecting Escondido with Oceanside. This line, which opened for passenger service on March 3, 2008, is operated with 12 "married" pairs of Siemens VT642 Desiro Diesel Multiple-Unit (DMU) cars operating every thirty minutes each way, with the service dubbed Sprinter. One pair of these married sets, NCTD 4011 and 4004, rolls into its first stop upon departing the Oceanside Transit Center two minutes earlier – the Coast Highway station at 7:35 am on a typically cloudy morning, thanks to being adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. This train will arrive in Escondido at 8:56. (Oceanside, California – April 2, 2021)
