Rather worn out 2TE116 # 1730 of the Mongolian Railway (Ulanbaatar Tömör Zam) is pulling a long empty northbound freight on the Emeelt pass. The locomotive with 2x3000 HP was built in 2007 at Lugansk (Ukraine). A total of 1,745 units of the basic version of the 2TE116 diesel locomotive were manufactured between 1971 and 2007. The largest number of locomotives of the series was produced in the 1980s. Since the early 1990s, after the collapse of the USSR, the production of diesel locomotives decreased significantly, from several dozen locomotives per year to a few locomotives per year, and for several years no diesel locomotives were produced. However, from 2004 the production volume increased considerably and lasted until 2007, after which the plant switched to the production of the improved version 2TE116U.
