In a shot taken on the last day of operation for Pan Am Railways, Pan Am Southern (joint venture between Pan Am Railways and Norfolk Southern) 16R comes off the system's western main line to Mechanicville/Rotterdam Junction, NY. Just ahead lies the large East Deerfield Yard. Five years ago, many thought a Norfolk Southern purchase of Pan Am would be in the cards. Priorities changed for NS, and instead, CSX ended up with a major expansion into New England with its own purchase of Pan Am. 16R at the time this photo was taken changed symbols to ED-9 at East Deerfield for the remainder of its journey to Ayer, MA; it now apparently keeps the 16R symbol all the way. Not much else has changed.
