Ball signal. In the remote area of Whitefield, NH remains what is touted as the last remaining active ball signal in the United States. Although active must be a relative term as the last train through here was 2018 from what I can find.
The tracks going left to right were Boston & Maine's Berlin branch, the tracks leading to the right were Maine Central's Mountain Sub which led to St. Johnsbury, VT. One ball or one red light will allow trains of the Boston and Maine to pass over Maine Central Railroad track. Two balls or two red lights will allow trains of the Maine Central Railroad to pass over Boston and Maine track. This signal has stood here and protected this crossing since 1875 and appears to be well cared for, hopefully ready if another headlight ever appears.
This album seeks to portray classic New England and Upstate New York imagery. It showcases the most perfect examples of regional identity, with special attention to structures and landscape.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
