Since October 2022, Amtrak's Pacific Surfliners operating between Los Angeles and San Diego have utilized a "bus bridge" between Irvine and Oceanside due to a massive right-of-way stabilization project in San Clemente, where the earth under the mainline along the Pacific Ocean has become too unstable to handle the weight and vibration of moving trains. So, for the remainder of 2022 and the early part of 2023, this bus bridge is in effect and, in this case, Amtrak train 770 is operating from Goleta (near Santa Barbara) to Irvine, with train 1770 – a number used for the southern segment for the time being – carrying travelers from Oceanside to San Diego. Amtrak CDTX SC-44 2112 leads the six-car train as it passes through the city of Orange, California, on December 8, 2022.
