This is Conrail train 5712, a Phillipsburg to Newark long commuter with CNJ Standards. Photo is taken on the Aldene Ramp in Roselle Park NJ. If I took one step to the left I'd be in Roselle. Date is December 30, 1977. I never knew the exact pattern for what trains had an engine on one end and a cab car on the other, what trains had engines on both sides, and what trains ran like this one, with one engine that had to be on the opposite end in the morning and in the afternoon, but this particular train was easier to figure out. It was the only train with an observation car. On the outbound runs the obs car would take up the markers. On the inbound run, it was tight against the power.
