Remarks & Notes |
LAMAR CO June 17 1979 — The well-maintained Lamar station hosts Santa Fe U28CG 7901 and Santa Fe U23C 7500. GE delivered the unit as ATSF 351 in red and silver passenger warbonnet. In the 1969-70 general renumbering it became ATSF 7901. After creation of Amtrak on Oct 30 1970 the 7901 lost its steam generator, was painted in freight colors and assigned to freight-only duties mainly in Colorado with forays to other areas as needed. Santa Fe withdrew the U28CGs from service on Sept 22 1980 and traded them in to GE for new B36-7 locomotives. All U28CGs were scrapped. My photo.
