At day break CSX M584-02 (Chattanooga,TN-Nashville,TN) is traversing the Raccoon Mountain grade in the midst of a hard rain, and dense fog. M584 had no issue getting the 8,000ft long freight over the crest as most of the train is empties heading back to the customer throughout the system. This is the aspect of railroading that I personally appreciate, and a lot of people never noticed. The railroad never stops no matter the time of day or the weather. The people of the railroad are an interesting breed coming from experience. Even in this early blue hour which gives off a nice late dreary fall scene, it’s just another day. Shortly after this photo was made, M584 “shot the air” went into emergency at the crossover just before the Running Water creek trestle. Which only means one thing? It’s time for the conductor to walk the train.
