Bluegrass RR had been on my bucket list for a long time, finally in August of 2020 we sent out on adventure to Kentucky and checked off several bucket list items in the Bluegrass state, Creation Museum & the Ark Encounter. While seeing the Ark in real life size was pretty cool I was itching to find myself in Versailles to check off one of the last bucket list item of our trip, the Bluegrass Railroad. We always like taking train excursions and plan most out trips around them but this train ride was two fold for me. You see with me literally "Growing up on the CW" (Chesapeake Western RR), my railroad quest in life has been to document all that I can about the CW. The Bluegrass RR is also a museum and one of their rolling stock collections had been what brought my attention to this railroad many years ago. Pictured just to the left the nicely restored N&W 875 (in my favorite N&W herald), is a Chesapeake Western boxcar. Up until this trip, all I'd ever seen of a CW boxcar was pictures which may sound odd since I "Grew up on the CW" But thanks to the Bluegrass RR & Museum for saving this boxcar, I was able to see one for myself and collect my photos. The museum has plans to restore this boxcar. If your ever find yourself in Versailles, KY make time to stop in for a train ride and afterwards grab a great steak dinner at Ricardo's Grill & Pub. Yeah you gotta eat there not only is the food great but its the old Southern train Depot and if your lucky, maybe you'll see a freight train come zipping by! Thanks Jim for showing us around.
Solely the CW Past and Present.
July 5, 1895 CW moved its first load of freight and although its existence is merely on paper today, its roots run deep. 129 years and still moving freight. The CW operates as a subsidiary of Norfolk Southern.
