This year, the German company HSL Logistik GmbH, together with its Swiss subsidiary HSL Switzerland (since 2022), is mainly using its new “Euro9000” locomotives from StadlerRail in front of the sugar beet import trains from Germany (northern Germany, Cologne area, Bavaria). With this very powerful six-axle locomotive (tractive force 500 kN), trains with a gross weight of around 2500 tons can be transported from Basel via the Bözberg line and other inclines in the Zurich and Winterthur area to Islikon and the Frauenfeld sugar factory. Locomotive 2019 # 308 with the name “Desert Rider”, designed by Mathias Oestreich and delivered in January 2024, is on its way to Islikon with a train weighing over 2400 tons between Winterthur and Oberwinterthur. The concept by Mathias Oestreich: “The approximately 500 million tons of dust that the Sahara produces every year, distributed by the winds, have an immense impact on our climate and our environment. The dust is also indispensable as a fertilizer for the forests. Annually, 40 million (!) tonnes of dust go to the Amazon, and around 500,000 tonnes go to Germany. The desert is unique, and so is the DesertRider." The Euro9000 locomotives of the HSL Logistik are owned by European Loc Pool (Frauenfeld), were built in Valencia/Spain and are leased by HSL Logistik on a long-term basis.
