NS 276, a reroute to these areas after a rockslide issue in WV, with the "Reading" heritage unit as a leader, heads past the former "Belle Meade" Distillery just west of Markham, Va. The surviving building is now used by farmers although now missing a roof. There were once several other buildings here and over 200 employees working at the plant, making apple cider brandy. During World War II the plant was used to make some military grade alcohol; the owner overcharged the government and they eventually caught him and the business closed. By the 1970's the buildings were largely demolished and the debris used for fill on nearby I-66.
