Remarks & Notes |
Amtrak and the Santa Fe made a deal on 18 SDP40Fs in 1984. Amtrak had a lot of derailment problems with these units. Some thought it might have been the hollow bolster version of the HT/C in the truck causing issues. The Santa Fe rebuilt them and fixed the truck issues in the mid-to late 80s. The Santa Fe also notched the noses to make them safer for crew use. The Santa Fe designated them SDF40-2s for freight service. The units made it through the BNSF merger and were renumbered 6960-6977. The units were retired in 2002. One leads a westbound over Main Street, Galesburg, during Railroad Days 1992.
Scanned negative from June 1992. |
