Great "period" shot for Amtrak. These are from the original group built by ANF-Frangeco in France; they are essentially copies of the SNCF's own turbine-powered RGP fleet - "rame a grand parcours" or "long distance trainset", which are just now being retired from secondary services. They have two Turbomeca helicopter-type turbines, one to provide motive power and a smaller one to provide hotel power. Between the cars they still had buffers and European-style screw couplings. I rode the lead car of a set in 1992 from Montreal to New York - quite comfortable, and the sound of the turbine winding up each time we left a stop was special.
