I think this was a Conrail Leasing unit (CRL). Many units that were added to the lease fleet were given a three-digit number and sent on their way with CR paint and markings intact. Corrections welcome, of course.

The C40-8's were arriving in the 6100 & 6200 series. These SD40's were in that series, so they were renumbered into the 800 series for a brief time then were sold to helm leasing later.
