The "A" means it has a 12 cylinder engine, instead of the normal 16 cylinder engine, Conrail like these for their fuel economy.

A like this shot and the Ballast Express unit. I appreciate any photos from the Conrail days, especially the ones with units which no longer service on Norfolk Southern lines.

As a previous commentator stated, they were FDL12's - instead of the usual V16's used on everyone else's C30-7's. They had the 12-cylinder engine in common with several other contemporary GE's - a large class of MP B30-7A's, the famous BN B30-7A "B" units and the follow-on CR-only C32-8's, for example. They're working in Estonia now, and you can see decent video of them there on Youtube.
