It looks as though the cars were empty. Top choices for railriders back in the 70's when that sort of thing was more prevalent. I can't imagine hopping a train and winding up in a tangled heap of twisted steel. I can recall watching the SP roll through Santa Clarita with riders frequently visible on their cars back in this era.
