Heck of a catch, Mr. LeMay.

Perhaps they're saving the Southwest Chief! If that is the case, good to see an EMD hauling a dead GE =)

I figure it was an HEP problem. Perhaps they had to turn the same Amtrak power around because they didn't have time to repair it between assignments. It's easier to keep a freight unit on there than it is to drag up a replacement Amtrak unit out of the ranks just because. They've done that here with the Texas Eagle before. There's a reason to everything.

How would adding a freight unit fix an HEP problem? I heard that Amtrak didn't have an ATS pickup shoes in Chicago (which allow Amtrak to run 90MPH down the Transcon), which caused the delay, but adding the SD70ACe makes no sense because it doesn't have ATS either. Both P42s sounded on-line.

You're right. That's what I get for making late night comments. I meant a traction problem, as in maybe one was getting juice to the traction motors, but they both might have been providing HEP.

No matter what the reason was, it still makes for a unusual sight! Great shot!
