Red brick depot and upper quadrant semaphores, just about a jackpot!

The fresh ballast in the foreground is the result of an L & N derailment that occurred several months prior to your photo. A south bound train derailed three or four loaded auto rack cars on the diamonds, several of which overturned. Several local groups were trying to save the beautiful Georgian Style Station. But in typical Railroad Management Style, very early one morning a crew circled a steel cable around the building and pulled it through the structure with a bulldozer ! End of problem, End of Station. Sphar & Company feed mill is still there.

The loss of this stately depot that served two beautiful central KY lines is one that railfans still feel today. Shortly after this photo was taken, CSX ripped up the line from Lexington to Ashland. A true shame.
