Beautiful. I love the landscape, tree, semaphore, and backlit plume. PCA vote here!

I'm not usually a big fan of UK steam, but this makes me want to cross the Pond and spend some time trackside. An absolutely stunning image, Steve. I can't wait until US Steam begins rolling again so I can try to compete. ;-) Very nice work!

The light-against-dark contrast makes this photo STUNNING! Perfect composition, perfect focus, perfect exposure and perfect colour. We all have a resistance to "foreign" trains. That is until you actually see them, then they become just as fascinating as your home ones. Having experienced UK railways several times, I'm a big fan. PCA from me. Well done!

Easily one of the best photos on RP! I'm stunned - The level has just been raised several notches. Phenominal! Hope admin gets around to fixing the SC award as it again seems to be off line.

A classic picture with outstanding ambiance. Good thing it's steam powered and not "common motive power" because it might have have been rejected for not enough "nose light".

You have my PC vote here. Absolutely phenominal, outstanding, hard to believe.

An absolutely beautiful scene with perfect lighting, composition, and subject. It seems like a great oil painting from another era. Fantastic work Steve!

Incredible scene you capture there, Steve. The thumbnail looks like a small painting from a book...I don't know how you can avoid clicking on this image to view it. Just another reason I'd love to visit the UK for train pictures.

Wow! Almost looks like a painting! This is just an amazing image... and as they say over in England, that's a handsome locomotive.

This photo defiantly has a heavenly quality about it! Great Work!

Some photographers occasionally get lucky. Good photographers make their own luck through knowledge, scouting, persistence, a good eye for a scene and solid technical skills. Congrats to you, Steve, for making your own luck. What a thrill it must've been when all of your work paid off as some magical lighting completed your picture. I can only imagine what you must've felt when you saw that payoff. Simply beautiful!

A beautiful image and well deserved screeners choice. As mentioned in an earlier comment, I have been enjoying all your posts because you have a real eye for the kind of lighting that appeals to me. Lighting is something that the U.K. photographers seem to excel at, and it is interesting to see this style of photography influence those of us on this side of the Pond.

Steve, that is one hell of a shot! The composition and lighting are superb, and that sky...wow! Congrats on Screener's Choice - you have my PCA too.

Absolutely perfect. Fantastic sky, superb light, foreground grass glinting, train glinting, composition perfect, I'm just stunned! And an A4 to boot!

What else can I add to those nice comments, that I all agree with - and wish they were my own words - ? Uh... yes, it looks like a painting! And, you get my warm congratulations Steve. Thanks for this artistic picture

Perfect photo. Great color.

Amazing.. could see that as a nice painting hanging on the wall.

Steve, great shot. There is not really anything that I could add to what has already been mentioned above. The data mentions 2001. I'm assuming this must have been a film shot. I know that equipment is not as important as skill but indulge us a bit on what you used at this time to make this photo. Film, body and lens etc?

Obviously the wonderful lighting helped but you still had to compose and take this wonderful shot and put all the elements together. It is especially nice for me to see this because the Severn Valley is my local railway and number 9 is my favourite engine

A great big THANK YOU to all who have voted for and viewed this image since I posted it. Also thanks must go to RAILPICTURES for hosting it. As a result of your support, it is (I think) the 1st UK-taken steam photo to achieve over 10,000 views. I can't believe it! We really are spoiled here in Britain, steam is never too far away. Every spare moment I go armed with my trusty Mamiya 645 to see the greatest 'free' show on earth. Hopefully there will be many more images to come - though I suspect few will have the 'magic' that No.9 showed on that afternoon. Thank you all again.

Could I thank all the many RP viewers who have made this image the first UK steam photograph to achieve over 20,000 views. It is a great privilege to know that so many of you have enjoyed this 'moment in time' that I was lucky enough to witness over a decade ago. Thanks again everyone. - Steve Armitage
