Prior to Amtrak, the good citizens of Alexandria, VA had a parade of southbound streamliners to watch late every afternoon. There was the Seaboard's Silver Meteor, Atlantic Coast Line's East Coast Champion and West Coast Champion, and Southern's Crescent. The local folk would bring lawn chairs and food, relax on that grassy slope, and watch the show. When Southern brought back the green paint on its E-units (they had been painted black and white for years,) one was nearly transported back to those earlier times. Even though the other surviving trains were wearing Amtrak's red, white and blue, by this time, they were still operating with, what we call heritage equipment today. Another great memory Don!
