6432 toiled on into 1973, when it became the last SP freight F-unit to be retired - still in Black Widow.

A typical lashup of an old not so reliable unit with a new reliable unit. These two units may have stayed together for days and several trains. I bet the crew liked it best when the covered wagon led. Really a nice shot of a proud old lady leading a new girl.

Actually, the covered wagons were no fun if you had switching to do. The engineers couldn't look backwards easily to see the trainmen's signals. They had to lean out the window and crane their necks to follow the signals of the train crew--lots of stiff necks and sore backs!
