If my memory serves me correct, UP #3895, a Challenger, is a 4-6-6-4 wheel arrangement. There are only (2) 4-8-8-4' (Big Boys) left in existance, both built by ALCO. One is on display in Cheyenne, WY and the other on display at Steamtown Nat'l Historic Park in PA. Neither of them are in operational condition. I have seen the one on display here in PA. It is an awesome sight to see a locomotive of that size. And to think these machines were designed before calculators, slide rules or computers. I was told by a Park Ranger that the estimated cost of reconditioning the one on display at Steamtown to fully operational condition would be in excess of 25 million dollars. When you consider our gov't wastes more than that amount every minute, the investment to return such a magnificant machine seams logic. Imagine the revenue it could generate from railfans all across the nation.
