The cross shaped signals mean: No shunting movements allowed (beacause there is a train movement). If the arms aren't crossed, shunting is allowed.

That is a wonderful picture. There were electric old-timers where everywhere in Switzerland at that time. Switzerland was a paradise. It is still one, but the modern trains now have an international standardized sleek boring look like everywhere. Remains only the beautiful landscapes and still some Swiss style looking trains... for how long?
