Ouch! That looks to have been quite an impact. I am pretty darn sure I would have "dropped a load in my shorts" had I been the engineer and this was the lead locomotive.

I would be willing to bet that unit was evidence in a lawsuit since it has the yellow construction tape over the broken places which would indicate that it is not to be disturbed or any repairs attempted. Also by the looks of the metal, that wreck had be sitting out there for awhile before the photo was taken since the scrape and tear points are all rusted.

This happened when the crew fouled the main track because of an improperly lined switch just as an eastbound train was approaching. The engineer was on the other end of the consist against the cars they were handling. One minor injury. Engine was sent to Barstow, was rebuilt and is still in service.
